Starring our very own Saoirse Ronan, this week's offering is The Outrun. After 10 years of spiralling into addiction in London, Rona returns home to the far-flung Orkney Islands in Scotland, hoping to maintain her recovery. Attempting to reconcile her complex family history as well as her destructive past behaviours, she takes a job with a wildlife conservation charity - allowing her to connect with the nature of her childhood home.
Director Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher) presents a vivid adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s personal memoir of addiction, powered by an extraordinary central performance from Saoirse Ronan. She beautifully portrays Rona’s fragility and grit as she journeys from destruction to serenity.
With a pounding soundtrack, a kinetic visual style and intricate narrative structure, this extraordinarily moving film is redemptive, cathartic and utterly riveting.
‘When it comes to disappearing into emotionally and physically demanding roles, there are a few actors out there as gifted and committed as Saoirse Ronan.’’
-Tomris Laffly, Harper’s Bazaar
‘‘★★★★ An exceptional performance from Saoirse Ronan powers this affecting, slow-moving drama about addiction and hope.’’
- Anna Smith, Total Film
‘‘Those in recovery, and those close to someone who is, ought to find something nourishing in The Outrun, a stirring reminder of the human capacity to regroup, to accept a bitter past and anticipate a better future.’’
-Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
